Steve’s Office

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Hello again. It’s Steve this time with some fun pics to show you, but first a quick announcement. You have 1 week left to enter our latest contest! For those that don’t know, your quote can be on our next flyer, plus you’ll get a free drawing on the flyer by Red Moon’s author/artist, Dave McAdoo. Details on the contest can be found here.

Ok, onto the pics. Thought you all might be interested to see where all of these blog posts originate from. Dave and I pre-determine what each blog is going to be about, what we’re going to show you, what text is included, etc. Dave writes his blogs and I write mine. However, when it’s time to post the blog on our official site and our myspace page, the posting is done by me in my office…

Yep, I’m a movie/comic book guy.

Time for the tour. First up is a HUGE drawing of Celanawe/Black Axe by David Petersen from his book Mouse Guard. I watched Mr. Petersen draw this piece at Mid-Ohio-Con last October and I won it in an auction! btw-On that shelf below are 3 binders that contain the first hundred pages or so of Red Moon.

Next up, Red Moon soda! On the back of the bottle it says, “This drink contains the power of nature, the essence of destiny and the bond between all living things. Upon consumption, you may experience horrific visions of the world in chaos beneath a haunting red moon. PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY” Only 12 in existence!

Next up are some graphic novels that I like.

And here’s some books that are helping me figure out how to publish Red Moon.

And last up is a message from Sauron…

Thought you might find it interesting to see where all these blogs are coming from and where I’m sitting when I hit that “post” button. Speaking of which…

Megacon 2009

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Hello internet people! Steve here again with a blog about my adventures this past weekend at Megacon in Orlando FL.

I got to the show early and put out our flyers on the freebie table. But I also noticed a table right by the line of people waiting to get into the show that nobody was using, so I put a bunch on there. Everyone that went into Megacon that morning had to walk by that table and Red Moon was the only thing ON that table, so hopefully it stood out. When I came back, most of the flyers were gone, so that’s good.

At last year’s Megacon, I picked up a book called Korgi by Christian Slade. I was excited back then to see another graphic novel centered around a dog. Since then, I’ve hunted down book 2. It’s a great book (as is book 1) and I brought it with me to the show just in case Christian was back. He was.

I got a chance to talk to Christian for a good while and he answered all of my questions I had concerning convention going, selling, etc. I also got a chance to show Christian some finished pages from Red Moon. He really liked what he saw and had nothing but good things to say. Finally, I got a one of a kind piece of artwork from him. I asked for a drawing of my favorite character from his Korgi series, the Creephog. He told me this was the first Creephog commision he’s ever done. I got the fist one!

If you like graphic novels about dogs (and I think some of you might) ;) then I highly recommend checking out Korgi book 1 and 2. You can find out info on Christian Slade and his Korgi series at www.ChristianSlade.com

Another person I wanted to get a chance to talk to was Derrick Fish who is creating a book right now called The Wellkeeper. He’s kinda in the same boat Dave and I are in with Red Moon…he’s self publishing. I’ve already seen some online stuff for The Wellkeeper and thought the artwork was really fantastic and the story sounded cool too.  Here’s a pic of Derrick drawing at his table…

I got to chat with Derrick for a while and once again am really appreciative of him answering all of my questions. From the finished pages he was previewing at the show, The Wellkeeper is looking to be really great and I can’t wait to get a hold of a copy when it comes out. For more info, you can check out www.TheWellkeeper.com or friend him on his myspace at www.myspace.com/thewellkeeper.

As a first time producer, or a first time ANYTHING really, it doesn’t hurt to find people in the field that are already established or some people that are kinda doing the same thing you’re doing and talk. Share ideas. Gain  some knowledge. It’s a valuable tool.

But if you see this guy, just ask for some butter or jelly. It’s Powdered Toast Man!!!

Miami Book Fair Adventrues!

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Hey everyone, Steve here again with my adventures from this past weekend. I attended The Miami Book Fair, which for the first time had a comic book/graphic novel section! TONS of people go to this fair…and wait until you see who I happened to run into! You gotta read all the way to the end of the blog to find out. ;)

When I first got there, I immediately hung up the Lost Dog flyers by the “Comix Galaxy” section so people could see them.

I had to get creative again as far as the color flyers go. There were no “freebie tables” around, so I just put them on the covered garbage cans/tent rope weights by the entrances to the Comix Galaxy area. It seemed to work because people were taking them. And it seemed like a good spot because other companies starting putting out flyers there too throughout the day as well.

Then it was off to see some comic book celebrities. I went to a presentation given by Art Spiegelman. Afterwards, he signed my copy of “Maus” and drew a pic in it!

Then I went to go see a see another seminar given by Scott McCloud.  He’s done some amazing books about the comic book creative process. His books “Understanding Comics”, “Making Comics” and “Reinventing Comics” are all really worth reading. You can find out info on those books at Scott McCloud’s Official Website. After his seminar, I got a chance to speak to him and gave him some flyers. He had some really positive things to say about David’s artwork!

Those were the 2 main comic book guys I wanted to see at the fair.

     HOWEVER…

Amidst the thousands of people, I noticed this guy walking around. I knew he was SOMEBODY, but I couldn’t quite place him. I walked by to see if he was wearing a name tag to signify he was a part of the show. He wasn’t. He was just there, walking around with his lady friend (or wife, not sure). Then it hit me all of a sudden. Was it? Is he? Could that be…Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons???!!! YES! I immediately got a flyer ready and walked up to him.

I didn’t want to be too pushy or take up too much of his time. So I said hello and mentioned that I had just watched the new Futurama movie “Bender’s Game” the night before (True fact) and that I really enjoyed it. (Another true fact. Watch it. It’s HYSTERICAL). He was really gracious, approachable, thanked me and shook my hand. Then being the producer of Red Moon and all, I handed him a flyer and told him this was a project a friend and I are working on and would be grateful if he took a look at it. And…that was it. I met Matt Groening AND he got a Red Moon flyer! Only thing is…I didn’t take a picture of any of this.

DOH!

Mid-Ohio-Con, Mouse Guard and Mox.

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Hi everyone. Steve here this time with a blog about my adventures at Mid-Ohio-Con in Columbus, OH!

I grew up just outside of Cleveland, so when I saw that there was going to be a really great comic book convention not too far away in Columbus, I made plans to attend so I could promote Red Moon. I really love Ohio. The people, the seasons, everything. It’ll always be a special place for me because of all the fun I had growing up there.

First thing I did when I got to the convention (an hour before the show was to start) I put up the LOST DOG flyer just outside the entrance.

Next up, I scoped out places to put our color flyer. We’ve shown you the front, now here’s the back…

I found that you’ve got to get creative sometimes when promoting. We’re an indie book that not many people have heard of, so ANY WAY you can get them to look at the flyer helps. I was able to put the flyers right at the ticket booth so that anyone picking up badges or buying tickets saw them. Plus, right when the doors opened, I managed to slide them onto the table where people picked up the convention’s program guide, along with some of our other flyers.

And finally I put them on the freebie table that was off to the side…

We estimate about 400 flyers being picked up and taken home the entire weekend. Not bad!

While at the show I met alot of great people/contacts. One of them was David Peterson, who is the creator of a really great book called “Mouse Guard”.  He looked at the first 25 pages of Red Moon and praised the strong black and white representation. We’re hoping to get a quote from Mr. Peterson on the back of the book, so getting a chance to show him some stuff and making a new contact always helps!

While you’re waiting for Red Moon to come out, head on over to MouseGuard.net and check out his book. It’s an all animal comic (mice, owls, snakes, crabs, bats, bees, and more!) that is kinda like Lord of the Rings meets Secret of N.I.M.H. The art is awesome. The story is awesome. If you’re liking what David McAdoo is doing in Red Moon, you’ll sure to like what David Peterson is doing in Mouse Guard. Oh and check this out, he signed my Mouse Guard #1, FIRST PRINT! Go me!

All in all it was a great convention. Tons of people saw and took home our new flyer, I made some new contacts and…I had a really fun time doing it.

Convention Adventures!

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Hi everyone! Steve here this time to tell you about some of comic book convention adventures David and myself have had so far while promoting Red Moon.

Basically David and I go to conventions (David on the West coast, Steve on the East coast) and pretend to be looking for Scruffy while we pass out the “Lost Dog” flyers. Plus, we put our color flyers on the freebie tables. Here’s the back of our newest flyer…

CLICK HERE for the full size version.

People have different responses to the “Lost Dog” flyer. Usually we get, “Awwww…” or “Oh, he’s so cute!”. Some people think that we’ve really lost our dog, while others know right away that we’re marketing something to them. It’s all in good fun. When those people get home and email us from the ScruffyisLost website, it’s been interesting. Someone told us they saw Scruffy with some Coyotes. Another person said they took Scruffy and then they laughed all evil-like, MWAHAHAHAHA! How great is that? Anyway, if you haven’t been to ScruffyisLost.com yet, head on over and email Scruffy’s family. You just might get a reward! ;)

So besides the flyers, we’ve also been trying to meet people already established in the industry for numerous reasons: 1) They have a wealth of information and are always happy to answer our questions 2) To show them finished pages from Red Moon and get their thoughts on them and 3) To get them interested in the project so that they might give us a quote for the back of the book.

So far, it’s been really positive!

At Dragon*Con, I met Eric Powell. He does this fantastic book called “The Goon”. If you’re not familiar, head on over to THEGOON.com He liked what he saw and gave us some information on how to get the completed book to him for a possible quote!

Next up, I met Andy Runton. He does this great graphic novel that features an all animal cast called “Owly”. Check out AndyRunton.com for details. I showed him the first 9 pages of Red Moon and he really liked the artwork and had many positive things to say about Dave’s drawings. We’re also hoping to get a quote from him on the back of the book and he let us know how to get the book to him as well. Plus, check out this drawing he did for me to keep me focused on producing the book!

At Comic-Con, David ran into Chris Gore, the creator and editor of Film Threat Magazine. He’s also on the cable channel G4 and was one of the hosts on their Comic-Con special. That’s like the holy grail for David and myself. If we could get on the G4 Comic-Con tv special next year, or heck, ANY G4 broadcast for that matter, we’d be ecstatic. I start talking like Wayne from “Wayne’s World” when I think about it, “It will be mine. Oh yes…it will be mine.”

Seriously, Dave needs to run into Chris Gore again.

So, what we DO know is that when we show the book to people in the industry, we’re getting really great responses. If anyone knows anyone in the comics industry that would be good for a quote on the book, or heck if you ARE famous in the comic book industry and are interested, please drop us a line! :)

Help find Scruffy!

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Hey everyone, Steve here with your next contest. But first, let’s find out who won the spot to be in our next webcomic prequel. The winner is (drum roll)…Sean Caylor!

Congratulations to Sean! He’ll be immortalized forever…just like the Highlander! Keep an eye out for Sean in our next  prequel webcomic.

Ok, so the next contest is a little different then the other contests. The prize is different, but I think you’ll all like it anyway. How does $200 sound? That’s right, the next contest is for TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS! How do you win that cold, hard cash?

     You help find Scruffy!

Early on in Red Moon, Mox (who is given the name of “Scruffy” by his human family) runs away. Soon after, Mox’s family puts up some lost dog flyers in order to help find “Scruffy”. The flyer you see above will be making an appearance in Red Moon. So if you want, you can print out a flyer and actually have a prop from the graphic novel! But there IS that $200 you want to win, so you’re going to have to print out more, because…

For every picture you send us of the lost dog flyer hanging in a comic book shop, independent book store or anywhere you think comic book fans might be, you’ll be entered into the contest. We’d love some pictures of the flyer hanging in front of some famous locations. BE CREATIVE. And yes, I said “for every picture you send us”. So really, the number of times you want to enter this contest is up to you! The more places you hang the flyer up, the better the shot you have at winning that cash. So send us as many pics as you want. (1 picture per location) We’ll have a special blog here on there official site where we’ll feature all of the pictures that are sent in to us. After 2 months, we’ll put all of the names into a hat (one name for each time you send us a pic) and randomly pic the winner of the $200! So print out the flyer, help us get the word out on Red Moon and maybe win some money in the process!

To print the flyer, just right click on the flyer above and save it to your computer. Then, open up the pic, print it out and hang it up! Like at your local comic book shop, like this…(p.s.-don’t forget to ask them first!)

Tate's Comics in Lauderhill, FL

War and Pieces in Davie, FL

Then once you have your photos, send them to redmoon.novel@yahoo.com

Oh and btw-Don’t forget to check out www.ScruffyIsLost.com Something is a little weird in one of the pics on the site. ;) And while you’re there, email Scruffy’s family. Who knows? They might email you back!

Good luck in the contest!
